SERC School on Topology and Condensed Matter Physics – Nov 23 – Dec 12, 2015

The SERC school on Topology and Condensed Matter Physics was organized by the Department of Physics, RKMVERI during November 23 – December 12, 2015, with financial support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The school aimed at introducing aspects of topology and their applications to problems in condensed matter physics, the primary objective being to bridge the language barrier between physics and mathematics as well as different specializations in physics as regards the topic of topology. Among the speakers, there were Mathematicians introducing and explaining fundamental concepts in the field of topology. On the other hand, the Physicists lectured on applications of topology to areas such as quantum Hall effect, topological insulators, quantum geometry, statistical mechanics of polymers, knots and vertex models, Abelian and non-Abelian anyons, quantum spin liquids, etc. There were 55 participants from leading institutes and universities including TIFR, IISc., the IIT’s, the IISER’s, IOPB, HRI, as well as from the host organization, the Department of Physics, RKMVERI. Overall, the school turned out to be a great success. The lecture materials made their way into a recent book “Topology and Condensed Matter Physics” published in 2017 by Hindustan Book Agency, New Delhi (http://www.hindbook.com/index.php/topology-and-condensed-matter-physics).
