The transformation of the liquid into an amorphous solid-like state has been modelled using microscopic descriptions based on statistical mechanics. In this talk, we will discuss extending the usual thermodynamic approach to the liquid state to describe the metastable liquid in terms of the free energy landscape (FEL) for a suitable free energy functional F[v]. The field (x) models a continuum field theoretic description of the many-particle system and is identified with the local density p(x) in the liquid.
