Applications are invited for open PhD positions in Theoretical Physics at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur, West Bengal, India, which is an affiliated centre of the Abdus Salam International Center of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. The ICTP is a UNESCO Category 1 research institute supporting science and education in the developing world. It promotes worldwide initiatives for the career development of Women in Science. The selected candidate may work with the faculty members of the Department of Physics at RKMVERI having a broad range of research interests in the following areas:

  • Statistical physics: Long-range interacting systems, Nonequilibrium statistical physics, Stochastic thermodynamics
  • Nonlinear dynamics: Synchronization, Bifurcation theory
  • Cosmology: Dark energy and dark matter
  • High-energy physics: Phenomenology, Collider physics
  • Quantum field theory, Conformal field theory, Holography
  • Theoretical condensed matter physics

  • The applicants must have completed a Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent degree in Physics or related subjects from a recognized university.


Support is provided to cover the student’s living expenses while working at RKMVERI towards her/his PhD, and if required, one return travel ticket from the student’s home country and also tuition fees. The grant does not cover health or travel insurances or incidental costs. The support will be initially for 1 year, with possible renewal up to a total length of 4 years. Renewal is based on satisfactory progress towards the degree as evaluated by ICTP on an annual basis.


The Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute is owned and managed by the Ramakrishna Mission, a worldwide, non-political, non-sectarian spiritual organization renowned for its universal outlook and involvement in humanitarian activities for over a century. The RKMVERI campus housing the department of Physics is located in Belur Math adjacent to the worldwide headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, with an ambiance that is not only picturesque and salubrious just next to the Ganges but also elevating and peaceful—an ideal environ for academic and research activity. The campus is well connected by public transport to the heart of the city of Kolkata (for example, the campus is about half-hour drive from the Kolkata airport and places like New Town and Salt Lake).

The Department of Physics at RKMVERI has been running regular Masters and Doctoral programs in physics since 2012 and 2010 respectively. The department has an extensive program of visiting scholars and scientists and has quite a few renowned teacher-researchers in various fields as Adjunct Professors and Young Associates. It organizes regular seminars, conferences and workshops in a broad range of topics. The department maintains strong research links with leading national and international research groups.
